Building Better Relationships in action

A man with a history of violent offences has praised a programme designed to address personal issues and improve future relationships.
With a conviction list including Actual Bodily Harm and common assault, with some against his partner, Michael* was placed on Wales CRC’s Building Better Relationships (BBR) programme.
BBR is an accredited programme aimed at men who have been violent in their relationships. Through a mix of group and individual sessions, service users learn more about the sorts of behaviour that can damage relationships. It can also help people to get a better understanding of themselves, see how personal issues play a part in violence and support people to build on their strengths to overcome any difficulties.
After completing the programme, Michael said he is now able to better react to situations and correct his behaviour if he reacts poorly. “I'm not exaggerating when I say I use what I've learnt on the BBR course every day,” he said. “The course really has made my relationships better. Not only with my partner, but with family members and colleagues as well.
“Thanks to the course I often find myself assessing situations where in the past I would have jumped before thinking. I am more mindful and assess unfolding situations for what they are instead of making a mountain out of a molehill.
“I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the facilitators of the course, Lyn and Emma. I honestly believe without them I wouldn't have taken as much from the course as I did. They delivered the programme enthusiastically and with a genuine desire to teach us something that would assist us in the future. Their non-judgmental approach made it easy to be open and honest with the group. I found it especially helpful when they would relate a skill back to a situation in their own lives. This made me feel 'normal' and I realised that everyone has day to day challenges but it’s how you deal with them that makes the difference.
“I am extremely happy that I have taken part in the BBR course and I know it will continue to change my life for the better. I have learnt so much and I realise that this is an ongoing process and I will continue to learn and put the skills into practice.”
