What we do

We aim to: protect the public, reduce reoffending and encourage restorative justice and rehabilitation, highlighting to offenders how their crimes affect victims as well as the public.

We work with adult offenders who have either been sentenced by the courts to a community or suspended sentence order, or released on licence from prison to serve the rest of their sentence in the community. We also support offenders who are sentenced to less than 12 months in prison via the Through the Gate initiative.

We work alongside the National Probation Service and other criminal justice partners including courts, the police, prisons, local authorities and voluntary and charitable organisations.

What do our people do?

  • Enforce, manage and supervise offenders on community sentences and on release from custody, and work with people in prison to address offending behaviour.
  • Assist the National Probation Service with information to provide offender reports for courts - these are known as pre-sentence reports.
  • Supervise, monitor and rehabilitate offenders on community orders through nationally approved programmes to change behaviour and reduce reoffending.
  • Carry out interventions work such as drug testing, Community Payback work, and employment, training and education activity to rehabilitate offenders.
  • Contribute to multi-agency panels which include police, prison, health and others to protect the public.
